«Book of Moon!»

The Topic!

http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Book_of_Moon

Welcome, I'll keep the introductions and senseless ramblings to a minimum.(I'll try I swear!) So hello! I'm Ventriloquist! Call me Vent if ya want! Today I'll be attempting to revive the long lost art of lessons. Which is basically just in depth discussion threads and examples of cards, how they work, combos, and other such things pertaining to the game itself. Most of these lessons will be more mechanical. Talking literally about how a card works and why. Or how a ruling works, and why. I'll try my best to keep opinion out of it. Now today, I'll be going over Book of Moon, and what makes it such a great card. The message here is meant to be positive, so I'm going to try and keep it that way throughout!

But before I begin! Let me link you to my buddy Yuya's thread. It's basically just a similar style thread where you can go and ask questions and get a direct answer to something you'd like to know about at the time. Rather than a lesson I made you read about something you had no interest in. I think the idea is great, and as many of you should use his thread as possible ^.^

The Lesson!

So! Today I'm going to try and explain to you the benefits of running this card. And rather than discuss it's cons in this thread (Though I might do a "Recap" sort of thing at a later date and do this lesson again, more in depth, with cons as well.) I'm going to explain how people play it badly. Which, is actually one of the subjects I'd like to touch on the most.

Now, you may or may not be asking, "Why Book of Moon?" Well I know a lot of people here already run the card religiously. And if you already think you know the ins and outs of the card, and are comfortable and confident using it. Hey, well this lesson may not be for you. I'll surely do more in the future and I'm confident at some point one will interest you. But to answer the question. Book of Moon is such a versatile magic card, especially in today's game, that it's more or less become a staple. Some strongly agree with that statement while others disagree. But with the recent magic card staples being hit (Reborn, Heavy.) Book has found itself a place in the deck of many a Dueling master.

OK. Now if I where to try and sit here and tell you every single situational, or even common use for book of moon... well I would end up writing double my normal post length just by sheer quantity of information within that question... and God knows none of us want to read that much(Or even as much as I'm already going to end up writing most likely XD) I can however tell you that the short answer can be summed up in one word. Versatility. There really are very few cards with as much versatility as the good ol' book. Let's look at just a very few obvious key points.

1: It's a quick play spell. Nuff said.

2: Stops attacks

2: Stops Extra deck plays. (Synchro/XYZ)

4: Interrupts effects, or prevents them from being used multiple times. OR allows them to BE used multiple times.

5: Can be used to get over high attack power monsters.

6: Protects from effects of cards. (Monster/spells/traps.)

Those are just the basic, common elements. In the end it really does boil down to the flexibility of the card to win you games. But remember... you only run 1, so knowing how and when to use your book is important. Wasting it JUST to save you a few life points that you clearly know would not be gg anyway is utterly retarded. Which brings me to my next point. Using book poorly, and how to avoid it.

Ok, so I myself LOVE synchrons. Though admittedly not the most competitive deck in the world, they are and always will be one of my favorites because I like the artwork, the play style, and of course the boss monsters. Summoning Quasar is just still too golden. But I actually decided to do this lesson after watching an opponent do something absolutely retarded.

K, so here's the duel. It's my opponents turn and he slams into my ryko. I flip, he responds with nothing and I pop the one back row he has set. He shifts into m2 sets one and ends his turn. I draw and play "Reinforcements of the army(ROTA)" to grab a doppel warrior. Then summon junk synchron. he still responds with nothing, so I effect and grab my recently destroyed ryko from the grave. At this point, my opponent quickly flips his face down to reveal book of moon and targets my junk synchron.

:|Bitch did you not just watch me add doppel warrior to my hand?

For those of you who may not see the problem here. Doppel warrior CAN summon to the field whenever I bring back my dead ryko. But since he hit me with a book, of course I'm not going to summon my doppel warrior! lol. Now, the reason this is a bad play is because everyone in Yugioh knows that a bigger hand is always better. When using cards like Evac. and Book, you want your opponent to minus, or commit to the field as much as possible. And this particular case is made worse by the fact he WATCHED ME add the doppel warrior. Plus, I'm running synchrons, and I'm a 3 quickdraw type of guy. Luckily, I had 2 monsters in my hand. The doppel warrior and quickdraw. So that same turn I was able to summon quickdraw ONLY because I still had doppel warrior in my hand and then go into junk archer.

Now again, Yugioh is fare to vast a game for me to sit here and explain every bad play with book of moon. But this is just one example where waiting for me to commit my doppel warrior to the field would have been far superior. I would literally have been able to do nothing but end my turn. So watch carefully, remember the cards you KNOW your opponent has at all times. And at least try to be current with the meta game, so you know how the decks your going to be facing work. Doing those things, will greatly increase your chance of knowing how, and when to play book. But as a general rule try and make your opponent lose as much advantage as possible. To get just far enough into their play that they can't recover.

Lastly, don't just use it whimsically. Remember, you only have 1 book. Save it for when you can make a big push. Don't just flip your opponents blue eyes face down if you can't get over the 2500 defense next turn. THAT'S! a wasted book.

Also, try experimenting. Again, versatility is the name of the game here. One example that I'm not entirely sure the popularity of is with black rose. Summon black rose let's say they fiendish and you flip book on your own black rose. The effect will resolve face down and you still get the field nuke.

So that's it. As I'd explained a bit before. I had already written this lesson once. And eh, I had a bit more info but I actually think what I've written this time is a bit better. Seems neater, I had more time to think about it and word things. And over all it just seems less sloppy. Depending on what you guys think, I'll either be less in depth or more in depth with my next lesson. So be sure to let me know!

The Hands On Experience!

Back when I first came to ODA, lessons always had "Homework." I enjoyed it. It helped me grow as a duelist. But apparently some people didn't like it. So this isn't homework, it's in NO WAY mandatory. But if you want to contribute to this lesson. Just to help yourself or someone else, post a screen shot of you or your opponent using book of moon.

If it's you, show the use of book of moon being done correctly and state why. OR! Post some odd uncommon use for book, like getting and effect to go off that normally wouldn't, or being used multiple times in a turn when it shouldn't (Ex: Ryko)

If it's your opponent, try and screen shot a poor use of book of moon and explain why. Similar to how I did (Sorry had no screen shot) with the guy vs. my synchrons.

The Reward!

Well, you see, I don't really have the power or access to the forums to be handing out OD. BUT! I'll present this lesson my fellow staff that can(*Cough* Hero. *Cough*) and see what they think would be acceptable. I'd say anyone who does the hands on work (Screen shots people) gets some fair amount of OD?

If this get's done, I'll be sure to update this section with the exact reward, as well as post and update notice in the thread itself. So be sure to check back especially if you see I posted again.

See You Later!

And remember! USE BOOK OF MOON!
