Can I only do this once per turn? Humm.

Hey everyone, Jason here! My lesson for you guys today? A lot of people I find have a lot of trouble with the once per turn thing so I’m here to help with that!

There is a difference between the once per turn clauses so here. Most of the old cards that are once per turn go like this. “Once Per Turn:” under PSCT or some variant of it. Here’s an example of this, Card Trooper.

Once per turn: You can choose a number from 1 to 3, then send that many cards from the top of your Deck to the Graveyard; this card gains 500 ATK for each card sent to the Graveyard this way, until the End Phase. When this card you control is destroyed and sent to your Graveyard: Draw 1 card.


With this variant, every time that it summoned to the field from anywhere. The effect can be activated, in this case, for trooper to mill.

From Return of the Duelist onwards, most of the cards that are once per turn have this clause. Let’s take for example, Maiden with Eyes of Blue and Raiden, Lightsworn Assailant.

When this card is targeted for an attack: You can negate the attack, and if you do, change the battle position of this card, then you can Special Summon 1 "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" from your hand, Deck, or Graveyard. During either player's turn, when a card or effect is activated that targets this face-up card (except during the Damage Step): You can Special Summon 1 "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" from your hand, Deck, or Graveyard. You can only use 1 "Maiden with Eyes of Blue" effect per turn, and only once that turn.


During your Main Phase: You can send the top 2 cards of your Deck to the Graveyard, and if you do, if there is a "Lightsworn" monster among those cards, this card gains 200 ATK until your opponent's End Phase. You can only use this effect of "Raiden, Lightsworn Assailant" once pe rturn. During each of your End Phases: Send the top 2 cards of your Deck to the Graveyard. You must control this face-up card to activate and to resolve this effect.


Now most of the new monsters have these kind of tight restrictions on their monster effects. If maiden was already targeted by an effect and then is attacked during battle or is targeted again, then it can’t use its effect again for the rest of the turn. Similarly, with Raiden, if his effect is used during the main phase to mill and then is summoned again for any reason, it can’t mill again for the turn.


Also for Traps!! Their once per turn clause can be applied during either player’s turn. Notable examples being Dark Smog and Castle of Dragon Souls.

The assignment this week? Find 2 cards that 1 has the old style of the once per turn text and 1 with the new style of the once per turn text. That’s 50 OD for each card. Up to 200 OD will be rewarded depending on the cards found and possibly if that card contains both styles of once per turn text and you being able to explain apart which one is which. Good luck.

Ancient City - Rainbow Ruins

1+: This card cannot be destroyed by card effects. (continuous)

2+: Once per turn (including the opponent's) you can halve the Battle Damage you take. (once  per turn during  either  players   turn)

3+: During either player's turn, when a Spell/Trap Card is activated: You can send 1 "Crystal Beast" monster you control to the Graveyard; negate the activation, and if you do, destroy it.
(once  per turn during  either  players turn)

4+: Once per turn, during your Main Phase: You can draw 1 card.
(once  per your  own turn)

5: Once per turn, during your Main Phase: You can target 1 "Crystal Beast" card in your Spell & Trap Card Zone; Special Summon that target.(once  per your  own turn)

Mystic Piper: Effect can only be used once per turn, not once per face up on the field.
Airorca: Can be used multiple times a turn, btw you also forgot to mention the possibility of flippering with Book of Moon or such.

All dragon rulers, can only be used once per turn and only one effect per turn. Can't be used multiple times.
Darkflare dragon, can be used once per face up. So can be multiple times.
Red eyes metal darkness dragon, can be used once per face up. Can be multiple times.
Delta Flyer, can be used once per face up. Can be used multiple times.
Mythic wood dragon, can be used once per face up. Can be multiple times.
Mythic water dragon, can only use its effect once per turn. Can't be multiple times.
All wind up cards can only use their eff once per turn while face-up. Can be used multiple times. So a book of moon can reset the effect. Rabbit can banish itself so its not face-up so it can keep on using its effect every time it returns until successfully negated.

Dragon ravine it says once per turn so if i use for example zephyros to take it to hand and the use it again i can discard one more time that turn or if i have 2 ravines in hand i can use one than activate another to use it's effect.

On the other hand mecha phantom beast warbluran can only use it's effect once per turn and only once that turn so if you summon him anyhow else again you're not allowed to use it's effect(s) more that once in your whole turn so only one effect out of 3 copies.(assuming you have 3 copies) Basicly just like dragon rulers.

Inzektor Dragonfly can be activated once per turn to equip another Inzektor monster to it, but it can be used every time it is on the field.


Pot of Duality is ONCE Per turn.

Continuous Spell card
Once per turn, during your standby phase: You can shuffle 1 card from your hand back into the deck; draw 1 card.

This card is an old effect and can only be used once per turn but if you can find a way to get out an other copy you can use it multiple times in 1 turn.

Noble Arms - Arfeudutyr

You can only control 1 "Noble Arms - Arfeudutyr". Equip only to a Warrior-Type monster. Once per turn: You can target 1 Set card your opponent controls; the equipped monster permanently loses 500 ATK, and if it does, destroy that target. (The ATK loss remains even if this card leaves the field or the monster becomes unaffected by card effects.) If this face-up card on the field is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard: You can target 1 Warrior-Type "Noble Knight" monster you control; equip this card to the target. You can only use this effect of "Noble Arms - Arfeudutyr" once per turn.

This card has both the old and the new text if this card pops a backrow and then is removed from the field and you activate another copy (or this copy for that matter) you can pop another backrow. However the effect of equiping it from the graveyard when destroyed can only be used once per turn and won't reset if it's removed from the field.
