Lesson 1 - The Basics Empty
PostSubject: Lesson 1 - The Basics   Lesson 1 - The Basics EmptyWed Sep 24, 2014 12:24 pm

Hello there,
Welcome to my first ever ODA lesson on the basics of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game! Today I shall be explaining what the game is, who created the game and hence owns it, when it was created, the various types of cards in the game, monsters, spells, and traps cards as well as some basic rulings of the game, any of my associates and fellow staff members should feel free to expand upon anything I have mentioned today provided they PM C.C. with a template of what they plan to post.

Onto business, Yu-Gi-Oh! is a trading card game that up to four players may participate in, Trading Card Game often shorted to the acronym that is known only as TCG, in Japan where the game originated, it is known as Yu-Gi-Oh! Official Card Game which is shortened to the other acronym available, OCG. When a person discusses OCG and TCG cards they are most likely referring to cards that are available within Japan only, OCG, or cards that are available everywhere, TCG/OCG. Yu-Gi-Oh! is owned by the Japanese company, Konami who own and distribute various other products and services. Notably, there are also various Yu-Gi-Oh! Anime's and Manga's created by popular manga artist, Kazuki Takahashi. Yu-Gi-Oh! was first launched within 1999 and was named the top selling TCG in the world by Guinness World Records on July 7th, 2009.

Now, enough with the trivia, time for the basics on the card game itself.

Gameplay
The Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game is a battle-based game in which players draw cards from their respective decks and take turns playing said cards onto the field on which the game is taking place. Each player uses a custom-made deck that ranges from a minimum of 40 cards to a maximum of 60 cards, however, it is vital that players maintain a deck that is closest to 40 cards for consistency, players also have an optional Extra and Side deck which may contain a maximum of 15 cards which can be accessible in certain situations, the side deck for instance, can be accessed between duels in a match and should be used in an attempt to counter the opponent's deck. Players are restricted to a maximum of 3 copies of a single card per deck with some cards being limited to even a single copy or two copies, in order for one to be aware of what cards are currently limited, semi-limited, forbidden and unlimited players need to follow the TCG and OCG banlists which are separate, I shall provide a link with the most updated banlist of the TCG and OCG below.

Each player usually starts with 8000 lifepoints, often shortened to LP, unless otherwise agreed upon by players or set by tournament rules, the most common starting LP are as follows; 2000, 4000, and 8000. In order for a player to win a duel the usual win condition is that the oppositions LP is depleted to 0. This is typically achieved by using one's "monster" cards to attack the opponents monster cards to inflict damage on the opponent and to destroy said monster cards.

Along with Monster cards there exists two other types of cards, with multiple varieties of each type of card, the other two types of cards are called "Spells" and "Traps" which both provide a nearly endless variety of functions. For example; these card's effects may negate and destroy an opponents card(s), counter the effect of an opponents card(s), or add a specific card from one's own deck to their hand, there are multiple more functions that my friends may also expand upon. Most monster cards used nowadays also have abilities of their own.

Zones
Cards are laid out on the field in the following manner;

  • Deck: The player's deck consisting of 40-60 cards.
  • Extra Deck: A deck containing up to 15 cards which may consist of Fusion, Synchro, XYZ onsters as well as destroyed Pendulum monster cards.
  • Graveyard: A zone in which cards are placed when they are discarded, take used spell cards and destroyed monsters for example.
  • Monster Card Zone: A field of five spaces where monster cards are placed when successfully summoned.
  • Spell/Trap Card Zone: Commonly abbreviated as S/T Card Zone as a field of five spaces where spell and/or trap cards are placed.
  • Field Spell Zone: A designated zone where Field Spell Cards are placed.
  • Banished Zone: An unmarked zone outside of the playing field in which cards that have been designated as "Banished" by card effects are placed.
  • Pendulum Zones: A reasonably new addition to the field in which two Pendulum monsters can be placed for the purpose of Pendulum summoning.

Knowing where all of these zones and locations are designated on the playing field is rather important otherwise the game cannot be played to the fullest extent.

Phases
Each player's turn consists of six various phases, taking place in the following order;

  • Draw Phrase: During the Draw Phrase, the turn player must draw a single card from the top of their deck, if a player cannot draw a card from their deck, they lose the duel.
  • Standby Phrase: The Standby Phrase exists mostly for card effects that activate or resolve during this specific phrase.
  • Main Phase 1: The turn player may summon a monster, activate card effects that they control, change the battle position of a monster, and set cards face-down from their hand.
  • Battle Phase: In the Battle Phase the turn player is able to attack the opponents monster(s) or the opponents LP if the opponent controls no monsters, the opponent may defend with their own spell or trap card effects and activation's. Each monster may attack once per turn unless otherwise stated by a card effect. If the turn player controls no monster or wishes not to attack this turn, they may proceed directly to the End Phase and skip the Battle Phase entirely, if a player proceeds through the Battle Phase then the player continues to the Main Phase 2 afterwards.
  • Main Phase 2: When this phase is in effect, the turn player may do all of the actions that are available in Main Phase 1, except normal summon a monster if they already did so during Main Phase 1.
  • End Phase: The End Phase occurs where the turn player declare the end of their turn, it is much like the Standby Phase as there are multiple cards that can be activated and resolved during the End Phase.

Chains
A chain will occur when a card or card(s) are activated in response to another card(s) effect or ability, these chains are resolved backwards. I shall provide a very basic example of a chain and I shall resolve it.

Player A activate the Spell Card "Dark Hole" during their turn to destroy all monster cards on the field.
Player B responds with the Trap Card "Magic Jammer" which negates the activation of the Spell Card "Dark Hole" after the discarding cost has been paid.
Player A replied with their Trap Card "Seven Tools Of The Bandit" which allows the negation of another trap card for the cost of 1000 LP.

The chain resolves backwards as I stated beforehand, Seven Tools Of The Bandit resolves first, to negate Magic Jammer, then since Magic Jammer was already negated due to the effects of Seven Tools Of The Bandit, Dark Hole resolves successfully, henceforth destroying all monsters on the field.

Now, I shall provide pictures of the various cards involved in the game; Monster Cards, Spell Cards, and Trap Cards. I shall also provide a picture of the playing field on which the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game takes place.

Urgh, forgot about that, the homework is that you must screenshot yourself taking part in a Duel. Explain what monsters, spells and traps you have in your hand/the field and how they are helping you.

You have 5 days, 100 OD to everyone who completes this homework.

Lemme start this by saying Lucky Chance is one of the best cards in the deck, since draw power n sheit. And Kryuel is very powerful as well, since it's a lv 4 1000/1700, so it's pretty much unbeatable =D And Dice-Nied bro... Nuff' said.

Lesson 1 - The Basics TGgpHuF

One of the newest assets to the deck, Ms. Judge, Normal Judge's waifu. It's a greatly underappreaciated card and i also run it mostly cuz 1800 atk beater =D

Lesson 1 - The Basics YFbWk7J

New monster in the house, Sasuke Samurai #4, one of many Sasuke Samurais in this world, but hands down, the best one Smile

Lesson 1 - The Basics 51Bc0DJ

Introducing Cup of Ace... It drew my opponent 2 cards so yeah, fuck this card e.e

Lesson 1 - The Basics AxzXQAI

Introducing RedBull. This card was the best in this duel, simply cuz a whopping 1k dmg Smile

Lesson 1 - The Basics EztUkfL

Just an avarage Gamble duelist in his natural habitat; Forced in a corner, begging for mercy.

Lesson 1 - The Basics RyItrAw

RedBull died... D;

Lesson 1 - The Basics VBD7Av7

My second most valuable card... It did 700 dmg Neutral

Lesson 1 - The Basics Pe0jYrz

An average Gamble opponent's ruined board =D

All-in-all, I wanna point out how my opponent got outplayed very quickly and how I easily took the win Smile

I would be providing OD for this, however, my internet speed is too slow, the page is still loading and for some reason I cannot see your pictures, can someone else please reward the OD?

And yes I did give a timeline for how long people had to upload their work, 5 days.

I can't even access Imgur to be able to upload my screenshot..

And with this, I shall lock the topic.
