My Dracula essay Empty
PostSubject: My Dracula essay   My Dracula essay EmptyTue May 28, 2013 6:11 am

This is actually a somewhat entertaining read Very Happy

So i'm in a gothic class and we were reading dracula. Teacher asked us to write an essay and to pick a good thesis (something controversial but debatable). So me being the creative mind that i am decided to write this.

There are multiple ways to portray a character in literature. It’s common though for a character to match the setting he’s in. During the time Dracula was written people were still sexist, so it would only make sense that gender plays a major role throughout the story. Dracula is seen taking advantage of these typical gender roles, Dracula does this by spotting out weak willed women, keeping multiple women around, and stalking them endlessly to the point where even death can’t do them apart. Dracula isn’t any ordinary lover though, he’s a vampire also. As a vampire he drinks the blood of others but why does he only drink from the women? The reason is that Dracula is nothing more than a pimp.
Dracula can always drink blood from men but a real pimp aims for women, many many beautiful women. It might be strange to call a vampire a pimp but he is portrayed that way. Why does a vampire need to be so picky about who he drinks his blood from? Because, he usually has sex with the person he drinks from. It would make sense that he wouldn’t have sex with the male characters because homosexuality was frowned upon during the time this was written. It’s also noticeable during the time he spent with Jonathon. He had every opportunity to drink Jonathon because he was trapped within his home but did not. Jonathon even made it out still breathing. This is still probably because of the time period. While this was all happening people were still seriously opposed to homosexuality. They were also very sexist during this time.
Due to how sexist people were when this was written Bram Stoker portrayed the woman as very naïve and weak. Dracula being a pimp is shown to play on that part and for some reason singles out Mina and Lucy. Lucy was the obvious prey because she was portrayed as the typical airheaded woman during the 1800’s . Lucy had multiple suitors and only cared that she was getting all of the attention. She was also really oblivious as to Van Helsing’s intentions, she did not realize the garlic and other precautions Van Helsing made were to keep Dracula away. Because of her not knowing she was constantly open to Dracula’s sexual appetite. Dracula, being a true pimp, was able to get to Lucy multiple times without much effort. It may seem simple for a standard pimp but because Dracula is a vampire pimp it’s difficult for him to travel which makes it exceptionally impressive how far he’s able to track them.
Good pimps are able to track and know where their women are. Dracula left Transylvania to England because there were more women to feed on. He also found Lucy there and made his move there. He also has 3 vampire brides with him. It’s only natural they be with him because of the sexual allure vampires have. He’s also been around for a very long time and he’s still sexually active which is impressive whether he’s a vampire or not. In that time he has probably been with many more women in the time he’s been “alive” but the book doesn’t go that far back.
Dracula really is an amazing vampire pimp. He singles out the worthwhile women and goes after them even though it would be easier to drink the blood from anyone. He’s also very focused on keeping his women as he demonstrates by finding and following Lucy. Not to mention its five women in the short span of the story. He’s also mainly active at night like most pimps. He basically spends his entire “life” going after women because he needs them to live. All this effort that he puts into them is what makes Dracula a true pimp.
