Hello to all of you ODA students.  Before I leave, I thought I'd leave you all with a little bit of an assignment while I was gone.  I'm sure you all enjoyed Nottu's awesome lesson last week on facing Spellbooks, so since we're continuing with meta, I've decided to continue it with Evilswarms.

If I'm correct, this deck was originally released a few years ago, however just recently in April was the set released called, "Hidden Arsenal 7: Knight of Stars".  The idea of Evil/Steelwarms being however, that certain cards were infected by an, "lswarm" virus and changed for the worse, or became, "evil" if you will.  I'll provide a list of the cards down below.

But really quick, this deck also correlates with Steelswarm quite well.  Well enough in fact, to the point where both groups are just combined and refereed to as, "lswarm".

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

Evilswarm Ophion

Like per usual, let's start off with the main boss monster.  In this case, it's Evilswarm Ophion.  Originally supposing to be Gungnir, Dragon of the Ice Barrier, this beast, comes quite in handy.  To begin, just the restriction that it can only be summoned with it's own archetype is nice.  Also, with the ability of  being able to stop all Level 5 or higher monsters from being special summon, this card is extremely handy for stopping to summoning of big boss monsters.  Finally, with it's detaching effect, you're permitted to add 1, "Infestation" Spell/Trap from your deck to your hand.  I'll go over how important these cards are when we see them.

Evilswarm Azzathoth

This card is good for getting rid of XYZ's and Synchro's in a flash.

Evilswarm Castor

This card is quite effective for supplying the necessary requirements for getting your main boss monsters on to the field.

Evilswarm Coppelia

I don't want to be negative here, but this card doesn't see a lot of play.  If you're trying to run any version of this deck at all?  I honestly wouldn't suggest running this card at all.

Evilswarm Hraesvelg

This card has a nice, "return to the hand effect".  You may find other cards take priority though.

Evilswarm Golem

This card is overshadowed by it's supposed, "nicer" original form.  Since it is a level 5, this card will see a lot of difficult play.

Evilswarm Heliotrope

This card actually supplies a vital role for this deck.  Some may be confused because it is a normal monster, but you know who loves normal monsters?  Rescue Rabbit.  Since this card is a level 4, you can bring our your boss monster much easier as well.

Evilswarm Ketos

I've seen this card here or there, but honestly I think there are better cards to run.  But, it's attack stat isn't awful, and it's level 4.  Sooo..  Meh.

Evilswarm Mandragora

This card is very useful.  I see this card in every build of this deck.  Having the ability to special summon itself it just nice on its own.  At first when I saw this card, I use thought it was a, "Cyber Dragon" for some reason, but it's not.   You're permitted to special summon it as long as your opponent has more monsters than you.  (Which is much better in my opinion)  Easily a card that you will want to run 2-3 of.

Evilswarm O'Lantern

Just like Ketos, I've seen this card in bits and pieces.  Just like Ketos, it has the effect of being able to tribute itself, to blow something else up.

Evilswarm Salamandra

Having a nice set of attack points is extremely nice for this monster.   I think this card is actually quite good considering because of it, you can mix in some, "Macro Cosmos" if you wanted to and make a bit of a banish deck.

Evilswarm Thunderbird

Just like Mandragora, this card should be run in every build of this deck.  While its attack points may seem a little shallow at first, when you read it's ability, you'll find that it can stack up those points quite quickly.  Basically, this card protects itself by getting strong and removing itself from any dangerous situation, and then being able to return itself for an XYZ summon the next turn if wanted.

Evilswarm Zahak

This card provides some nice attack stats to back up its average effect.  I honestly can't say it'll do too much for the meta.  Considering how popular XYZ's are now, you may think of running other cards before this.  ...B-

Evilswarm Obliviwisp

This card actually has a nice effect.  Plus with its very nice 2050 defense, you'll be sure to stop something.  So basically, after any monster battles this card, it's just attack and defense points.

Evilswarm Kerykeion

Just like its original nicer form this card is extremely good and should be a must run for this deck.  A very useful card and a must have for summoning quickly.

Evilswarm Nightmare

With a name like this, you'd think the card would be extremely good, right?  Wellll...  Meh.  While it's effect is nice and can stop some bigger plays, its attack stat is extremely lack and it is overshadowed by a lot of other cards.  I like its effect, and its defense is nice...  So I'd only run 1 at most.

Evilswarm Thanatos

This card is actually pretty nice.  Paired with, "Infestation Pandemic", this card is immune to any affect.

Evilswarm Bahamut

This card is very nice.  I see this card as being a Number 11, with just a smaller added cost.  However, this card being much easier to summon than Big Eye, I do see it being just as good.  I'd suggest running 2.

Evilswarm Ouroboros

The very last monster card on the list is Evilswarm Ouroboros.  This card with its nice 2750 attack stat also has a very interesting effect of being able to have 3 different effects.  However, you must pick each of them.  This card is actually good too because it can be run in any deck too.  This card's 3 abilities basically just get worse as you use them.  But, I still suggest running 1 or 2.

Infestation Pandemic

The really main spell I see for this deck is, "Infestation Pandemic"  This card basically makes it so all of your monsters are immune to the effects of spells and traps for the turn.

Infestation Infection

Just like the spell, there is only 1 main trap for this deck, "Infestation Infection".  This card is actually kinda useful.  You can use this card to instantly escape one of your monsters from a, "Dark Hole" or "Bottomless Trap Hole".

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

So that's basically the basics of the deck.  Most of the lessons also provide of a few examples of counter decks to defeat the current deck.  Evilswarms honestly don't have a lot of weaknesses.  They have a handful, and the cards to used them aren't the most common.

So I suppose I'll leave that to you all.  What do you think is best to counter this evil themed deck?

As per usual, the given prices are 100 OD for the counter answer, and 200 OD for the Match Up.  Good luck and happy dueling!

evil swarms are really hurt by decks that can spam out xyz and have effect destruction  ryko snowman eater penguin soldier are good ways to rid ophion.... as well as in hunder family using starliege  and gemknight pearl among others  evil swarms are only as good as the matchup their facing  they cant replenish as well as many decks can so once you big play falls its harder to recover  also cards like concecrated light locks the deck out from doing pretty much anything ....and shadow mirror also causes it to have issues..... but the deck is ok vs stuff like edragos if they don't have the blaster to pop ophion....and karakuri and sychro /fusion based  decks ....also wind ups tend to eat swarms alive since they can get around the restriction by changing its monsters levels  into rank 5's....just my thoughts on swarms they are fun but defiantly over hyped and over used in my opinion

Verz can be easily dominated by decks that use little to none lv.5+ monsters.
A good example of a very good matchup is 4-axis Fire Fist. With their Searching of Bear and close-to-none Special summoning, they can easily devastate Verz Xyz plays.
Some cards to side against Verz include:

Royal Decree - Verz players usually main a lot of traps (around 13), and Decree will make 1/4th of their deck unusable. It's also pretty hard to get rid of since MST is almost never mained anymore, and Evilswarms usually don't have a lot of Xyz plays for the duel, and going Dire Wolf to get rid of decree might cost them game.

Tsukuyomi - Sets Ophion, making it's continuous effect unusable and allows smaller monsters to get rid of it even in decks like Mermails, E-Dragons etc.

Stygian Dirge - Absolutely kills their Xyz plays. They can't bring out anything but Rank 3 Xyzs (which they shouldn't have in their extra), so they have to rely on their highest ATK beaters to win (Heliotrope).

Metaion, the Timelord - Returns their Ophion to the extra deck and allows you to swarm in your Main Phase 2.

Skill Drain - If it doesn't hurt you, it hurts them. A lot. If Skill Drain is already face-up on the field when they summon it, they can't use Castor's effect. Their only out to Skill Drain is a well placed Infestation Pandemic, but it will only last one turn.

If you're using a deck like 4-axis Fire Fist you won't even need to side any of those cards for a simple reason: you (should) run 3 Tenki and 3 Bear. 1 Bear is enough to get rid of their Ophion and they can't really make any comeback since their only chance to get any other good field presence is Verz Kerykeion.  Fire Fists have so many outs to all of the deck's moves, that beating them will be very easy. Their only problem is the backrow the Verz player runs, really.

Agreed fire fist is excellent vs the swarm....and being that one of the most common protections Lswarm use is Safe Zone  as well as being known to main deck virus and effect stoppers like breakthrough or chain royal decree is definatly another good call

First of all, with proper luck and skilled play, E-Drags already have what they need to get over this Deck. Blaster, Dragon Ruler of Infernos, anyone? Regardless of which particular card they're using to lock you down, with the heavy focus on monsters and protection from S/T, I can't really see how Blaster wouldn't just... Blast... Everything upon existing in your hand.

Then again, we're facing the Meta, not using it. So let's try something a little more original.

One Deck that seems like it would work well against Evilswarm is the Lightsworn/Noble Knight build that Kyo came up with. I don't really know how his Deck plays, but the idea makes sense here. Basically, the perks it has against Evilswarm are that, one, it runs entirely level 4 or lower monsters, removing some of the plox in the Deck of being able to face higher than Level 5 Decks. It also focuses on bringing out strong Level 4 Xyz monsters, most famously Artorigus, King of the Noble Knights once he has a few equip Spells lounging around in the Graveyard. Thanks to these factors, he has a pretty easy time getting over the power monsters of the Deck, and no trouble at all getting around the effects (as an afterthought, wouldn't it be incredibly trollish to Forbidden Lance something in chain to Infestation Pandemic? XD).

A card that I think works against Evilswarms would be Tualatin. It has a limited number of applicable Decks, but if you get it out before Ophion (or just Breakthrough Skill the thing) then you can utterly lock this Deck out of DARK monsters... Which, last I checked, was everything it has.

Consecrated Light does the same thing as Tualatin but better. Just sayin.

would have to agree with kyo concencrated light is far less situational then tualin and easier to summon and protects against the deck better ....of course  I used to side in lights vs the dark world era  and never regreted I still side lights vs evils with the exception of a random rabbit attacking over  it typically never leaves the field

My only issue is that Consecrated Light spends your Normal Summon and can't really DO anything to monsters already on the field. It's a slim thing, but Tualatin DOES have the perk of being harder to get over with Maestroke if the Evilswarm player already has monsters on the field.

Edit: Crap, Maestroke is DARK as well XD Hm... I guess I'm beat

in regards to monsters on the field already ... odds arethey are dark..cant attack..cant kill him even if they find a way to attack ..and doesn't take damage from  the attack yeah u use your normal summon but decks typically have ss outlets which make normal summons a irrelevant point wether u waste it or not ...outside of typical outs like dark hole ..book of moonthey cant really get rid of that tiny ball ...

Breakthrough skill is a good card against evilswarms since it can negate any of their effects and it can be used twice ( useful against Ophion ). Effect veiler, Skill Drain, and fiendish chain are also good for effect negation. For elemental dragons Angel 07 is good because it can negate monster effects from activating anywhere ( grave, hand, field, and banish area ). Koa'ki meiru drago is good if your running dragon related decks since it prevents all light and dark special summoning and if you can keep koa'ki alive you could potentially win. Another card under the radar is consecrated light since it prevents darks from being normal or special summoned which is devestating to evilswarms and keeping it on the field can also potentially give you game. Decree may also be of use since evilswarms tend to run backrow.

As for decks with good match-ups against evilswarms Constellar has a good match-up since it doesn't rely on high level monsters to go off and even without the high level monsters the deck can summon big beaters like nothing. Prophecy ( spellbooks ) has a good match-up against the deck due to its speed and many out cards and the only card hindered in the deck is priestess not able to be dropped while ophion is on the field. E Dragons have an advantage over the deck if going first and due to their effect negation abilities ( breakthrough and/or veiler ) and their own pop card ( blaster and draco sac if its already on the field ) make not to mention its speed advantage gives the deck a good match-up against Evilswarm.

Btw the way the reason i didn't put down cards like snowman eater, ryko, exploder dragon, or other cards that can pop is because of the fact that the deck usually runs 2 -3 ( generally 3 ) forbidden dress which would protect their monster from destruction by effects.

Actually, when I talked about monsters already being out, I was referring to them being available for an Xyz. Since a non-Dark Xyz would be fine in these conditions.

I believe that if you're smart enough you will not summon it when 2 monsters of the same level are on the field.

the best ways to counter evilswarm has to be evac, fiendish chain, and hand traps. evac and back ophion right back to the extra deck so you can ruin some big play their planning. fiendish chain this card can basically stop all there effects and prevent them from attacking you. Hand traps 2 prime examples of hand traps are kalut and honest. Basically you can add on attack poitnss higher then evilswarms to kill them.

well again i offer the deck of heroes as a counter to evilswwarms because of their high swarm ability and usually low level monsters. heroes played as bubble beat are perfect because they consist of mostly level 4 monsters that have the ability to quickly summon. then they can bring out cards like excalibur or blade armor to take out any monsters the evilswarms might have mostly ophion. and with ophion out of the picture it opens up the posibility to miracle fusion. also heroes super poly also works because it presents a good oppurtunity to take out evilswarms monsters before they overlay and it cant even be stopped my infestation pandemic. so it presents a huge shut down property to stop evilswarms before they get started and also to get over them if they complete a good combo

Skill Drain can hurt them a little but it will also hurt you, unless you're deck is built around it. There is also the fact that they can still use "Infestation Pandemic" to shield all their monsters from "Skill Drain" for the turn.

Ok, so...

A good card to go up against Evilswarm would be Mystical Fairy Elfuria. In a Deck focused on WIND monsters of any level other than 4 (admittedly not a particularly large list of effective possibilities) you could basically shut down one of the main facets of this Deck, the Xyz. This card is also rather easy to protect and replace. I almost want to try building a Deck like this, but eh...

It's much harder to run nowadays, but a good matchup against Evilswarms could be Inzektors. They have the ability to use their lower-level monster-equip loops to destroy (Hornet) or otherwise neutralize (the Exa Xyz, which works since it's easy to alter Inzektors' levels without actually summoning Level 5/6 monsters) Ophion, then play unhindered. Evilswarms focus on maintaining hard presence with strong monsters and protection from Spell and Trap effects, leaving the monster-based strategies of Inzektors open to clear its enemy's opposition and do serious damage.

Perhaps there were better options, but here we go with that.

Genex Ally Duradark, while not my prefered option, can get rid of cards like ophion do to its effect of destroying a monster the same attribute as itself once per turn ( its dark just like all the evilswarms ).

How about use effect veiler or fiendish chain to hold ophion?.

Well my counter answer to get on Evilswarms is Flying "C". Evilswarm usually only uses XYZ monsters in the extra deck and the deck doesn't destroy their own cards very often so it will be very difficult for them to get around Flying "C". Now my counter match-up to Evilswarms are Constellars. The deck has access to more versatile Rank 4s and 5s than Wind-Ups like Palades, Starleige, all that stuff. Constellars also level modify and with Sombres they can recycle much more easily.
